Majorca

The island of Mallorca (Majorca) off the east coast of Spain is the largest in the Balearic Island group, which collectively form one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world, and certainly in the Mediterranean. Mallorca took off as a tourist Mecca in the 1960s, when a development boom spawned the building of hundreds of high-rise hotels, apartment blocks and shopping centres which now line most of the island’s coast. The capital, Palma, however still retains some of its historical flavour sporting grand mansions and a magnificent Gothic cathedral in its bustling centre. The northwest coast, too, still offers some secluded coves below the peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, and several quaint old towns and villages.

Independent Majorca resort reviews

Alcudia With one of the longest beaches in Mallorca Alcudia and its neighbour Puerto Pollensa is a beach lover’s paradise. There is something for everyone in Alcudia and if the children get tired of the beach then there is always the nearby waterpark to keep them occupied. There is a wide range of hotel-based entertainment at night along with many bars and eateries. Note: As Alcudia is on the north coast the high winds can be a problem at the end of the season. Transfer time from Palma airport is around 1.5 hours by car but can take up to 2.5 hours by coach.

Cala Bona Situated on the attractive and quieter east coast of Mallorca Cala Bona is a pleasing Spanish town that still has a working harbour. It has a friendly center with narrow lanes that are lined with bars and pavement cafes. It is linked to its close neighbour Cala Millor by a lovely promenade where you can enjoy an evening stroll after eating at one of the many restaurants. Public transport on the East coast is limited, so it may be worth considering car hire to see more of the surrounding area. Journey time from Palma airport is around 2 hours.

Cala d'Or The small town of Cala d'Or is situated on the southeast cost of the island abound 60 km from the main airport at Palma. Cala d'Or is made up of many small coves, which are blanketed with golden sand. Cala d'Or is very chic and is the centre for art and crafts with a good selection of boutiques. The town is spread out but a small tourist train links all points of the town. The main nighttime activity revolves around the small harbour where you will find a good selection of bars, restaurants and the odd disco. Note: the resort is rather hilly so may not suit the less mobile.

Cala Millor  is an impressive small man made resort situated on the sunny east coast of Mallorca. It's lively - but not too loud, and would make an ideal resort for both families and couples. There are lots of shops, bars and restaurants, which complement the lovely sandy beach were a wide range of beach activities and watersports take place. Journey time from Palma airport is around 2 hours.

Calas de Majorca Set on the southeast coast Calas de Majorca is a self-contained resort in a very pretty part of the island. Close to Porto Cristo - which is as close you'll get to true Spain, Calas de Majorca can offer a very pleasant holiday taken at a pace that suits you. The local restaurants are excellent and many serve fresh fish landed at Porto Cristo harbour as well as more traditional Spanish and European dishes. There is a small beach, which offers the usual array of watersports and if it gets too hot you can always cool down in the local Caves of Drach, which are only minutes away.

Can Pastilla is just 1 km away from the main airport, which may be too close for some. On the plus side the resort has a lovely beach and is only a short bus or taxi ride from the capital. The resort attracts a large number of families and young couples looking for an active beach holiday with something to do in the evenings.

C'an Picafort They say the best thing about C'an Picafort is its 12km-long beach. The worst thing is making up your mind on where to place your towel. The centre can be lively in mid summer but you can always find a quiet spot if need be. There's everything you will ever need for an enjoyable holiday, with lots of shops, bars and restaurants to choose from. An ideal resort for families and couple alike.

Magaluf and its neighbour Palma Nova have been described as the "San Antonio" of Majorca as well as "Blackpool with the sun". Both are reasonably correct but if you're after an active holiday with lots of beach activities in the day and a lively nightlife, then look no further. There is something for everyone looking for an active holiday but if you’re not into bars and discos till dawn, then try somewhere quieter on the island.

Playa de Palma Situated on the south coast, close to the airport and just a few miles from Palma City, the beach is not only long but is extremely wide with lovely fine sand and a safe shallow slope into the sea. The beach is so large that even during the busy month of August you can still find space to sunbathe. Playa de Palma (Palma Beach) offers a great selection of open-air cafes and bars as well as numerous restaurants and shops to browse for souvenirs. Nightlife is laid-back with something to suit every taste. An ideal resort for families and sun lovers alike.

Sa Coma situated on the east coast of the island is an ideal resort for families. It has a lovely sandy beach and just enough shops, bars and restaurants to keep most tourists happy. Behind the beach is a wide traffic free, promenade. Evening entertainment is generally hotel based, although the resort does have a small number of lively bars. Sa Coma is about 60 km from Palma airport and transfer time is around 1.5 hours.

Santa Ponsa has seen some impressive improvements during the past few years resulting in a new promenade and an extended sandy beach. Santa Ponsa is safe middle ground for tourist looking for something to do during the day and a lively - but not too loud, nightlife. There are lot of bars - especially Irish ones, which provide great ale and food as well as live music. You will also be impressed on the wide range of restaurants, which is great for those on a self-catering holiday.
